With Father’s Day this weekend I thought I’d do a recipe round-up and blog hop of Father’s Day recipes. Since I inherited my love of food from my father, it seems only appropriate to offer a food-based homage. Growing up we’d go grocery shopping together, and then I’d stand in our tiny Manhattan kitchen observing as he minced garlic, crushed plum tomatoes, and made spaghetti. I learned to always save some pasta water to add to the sauce (it helps it stick) and to finish cooking the pasta in that sauce. I learned to sear meat on the stove before transferring it to the oven, and I ran away in terror as my dad took live lobsters from the bathtub to the huge pot on the stove.
Growing up I didn’t like fish or seafood (I’ve since changed my ways), so any time my dad made it for dinner he’d kindly cook me a gorgeous steak in its place. My dad’s steak is almost always topped with sautéed onions and mushrooms and served with mashed (or baked) potatoes and a vegetable, so that’s how I prepare it as well. I think he’d also really enjoy this pork basted in butter.

Whether you’re grilling for Father’s Day or cooking indoors, this Asparagus with Garlic Two Ways is the perfect side for just about any meal. It’s great with chicken or steak, or along with other veggies and a grain for a vegetarian meal. If you’re already grilling, grill the asparagus while you’re at it, as in this recipe for Roasted (or Grilled) Asparagus.

And, while my dad doesn’t have much of a sweet tooth, who can resist chocolate peanut butter cookies? This recipe gets rave reviews and is now in regular rotation amongst many of my friends. They’re also great to make with kids if you’re looking for something you can make with them for Dad.

I also know how tough this holiday is for everyone who has lost their dads, and my heart goes out to you.
That steak of yours looks absolutely delicious, Katherine! Thank you for the party 🙂
Lovely steak and asparagus dishes. And who can resist cookies? Fun blog hop – thanks so much for hosting.
My dad knew how to cook pancakes and fried eggs. He thought he knew how to cook steak and I guess it sufficed for him but I must admit that your dad’s version looks much more tasty!
The steak looks done perfectly and paired with asparagus it looks like an ideal meal for the Father’s Day.
What a great idea for a blog hop! Can’t wait to look through all the recipe ideas and find new favorites (maybe some my picky dad will even like!). I especially loved your stories about cooking with your dad, which made me remember my dad’s specialties – he made the best-ever egg sandwiches!
